Food Truck Wraps and Graphics: What Decides the Look, Durability and Cost

This guide goes through those conditions using the data sheets and warranty bulletins of Avery Dennison and 3M. It gives no prices, because a wrap can only be priced for a real vehicle.

Start with the surface, not the design

A wrap is only as good as what it sticks to. Both makers are clear about that.

Avery Dennison's data sheets for its Supreme Wrapping Film (SW900) and its printable MPI 1105 film list the uses they are "not designed or recommended for". Among them:

• paint that is not thoroughly cured or dried,
• painted surfaces with a poor paint-to-substrate or paint-to-paint bond,
• non-OEM painted vehicles,
• graphics exposed to oil, harsh chemicals, or gasoline vapors or spills.

The SW900 sheet also lists stainless steel as unsuitable. 3M's bulletin for IJ180Cv3 lists paint as a suitable surface but adds "check adhesion to powder-coated or water-based paints", and it sends stainless steel jobs to a different film. 3M's warranty bulletin does not treat repaired surfaces, aged paint, body damage or uncured paint as suitable substrates.

Our reading: a food truck body is often built and painted by the body builder, not by the vehicle factory. That puts it close to what Avery calls "non-OEM painted". So if you plan to wrap, tell the builder before the body is painted, and let the paint system and the film be matched. If any outside panels are stainless, the wrap shop needs to know before it quotes.

How long a wrap lasts: the makers' own numbers

Neither maker gives one figure. The rating changes with the film, and again with the angle of the surface and the climate zone.

Avery Dennison SW900 (colour film, unprinted)

The SW900 data sheet (revision 20, March 2026) gives this table. "Vertical" means the face of the graphic is within 10 degrees of vertical. "Horizontal" means between 45 and 90 degrees from vertical. Anything between 10 and 45 degrees is rated at the horizontal figure.

Avery defines the zones in a separate bulletin (IB 1.30) by geographic location. We have not read it, so ask your installer which zone your area falls in. The sheet says the warranty term equals the durability, and horizontal applications follow Avery's ICS Performance Guarantee. Abrasion and loss of gloss are not covered, because Avery treats them as normal wear and tear.

Look at the gap. The same colour film is rated at 10 years on a vertical face in zone 1. On a horizontal face in zone 3, it is 4 months.

Our reading: the roof and bonnet of a food truck are horizontal faces, and the sides are vertical. If the roof is wrapped, expect it to age first. Ask for the horizontal rating of your film.

Avery Dennison MPI 1105 (printed film)

A wrap with a logo and artwork is printed, not a plain colour film. The MPI 1105 data sheet (revision 12, December 2025) says "Durability: Up to 7 years (printed)" and "Vertical Exposure up to 7 years". It then refers to Avery's ICS documents for printed durability.

The charts split it further. In the HP Latex chart, MPI 1105 with the 1000Z series laminate is listed at 5 years for vehicles on some printer models and 4 years on others. That is expected durability in years for vertical exposure in zone 1. Avery also states that when an ink or clear coat is rated for less time than the film, the finished graphic is warranted only as long as the least durable component. Horizontal outdoor faces are also excluded from the removal warranty. Unless the chart states a figure, horizontal applications have no durability expectation.

3M IJ180Cv3

3M's product bulletin gives IJ180Cv3 an "Expected Performance Life of 10 years". The conditions come in the same line: "unwarranted period for unprinted film with no graphic protection, applied to a flat, vertical, outdoor surface". 3M's warranty bulletin then says that such phrases "are estimates only and are NOT warranty claims".

The warranted period is set in 3M's separate warranty matrices, by film, ink, printer and exposure. We have not read them, so we give no figure. The bulletin also points to a map of hot, arid parts of the US Southwest where warranted durability is reduced. It covers all of Arizona and New Mexico, plus parts of California, Nevada, Utah and Texas. 3M lists horizontal vehicle wraps as a use only when the film is protected with one of four named 3M overlaminates.

3M draws the line at 15 degrees from vertical. Avery uses 10. So ask which maker's film you are getting.

What else shortens a wrap's life

Both makers list the same kinds of factors. 3M names:

• the combination of materials used,
• complete ink drying or curing,
• the selection, condition and preparation of the substrate,
• surface texture,
• application methods,
• the angle and direction of sun exposure,
• environmental conditions,
• cleaning or maintenance methods.

Avery's list for SW900 is close to the same. Its guarantee terms also exclude failure caused by mechanical washing equipment, engine exhaust and steam. Our reading: a food truck has extraction and often a generator, so plan where the vents sit before the artwork is drawn.

Washing a wrapped food truck

Avery's care leaflet for Supreme Wrap says:

• Do not wash the vehicle in the first 48 hours after the wrap goes on. After that, wash it every 2 weeks.
• Avoid automatic car washes with brushes, which "may scratch the wrap or catch the wrap's edge".
• Excessive spraying at the wrong angle can lift the edges.
• Remove bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap as soon as possible.
• Use a detergent with a pH between 5 and 9. Wax is fine if it has no petroleum distillates.

The SW900 sheet goes further. Soaps, waxes or coatings with petroleum distillates or solvents void the warranty, and matte films can change colour and gloss with cleaners and polish. 3M's IJ180 bulletin asks for a wet, non-abrasive cleaner without solvents, with a pH between 3 and 11. 3M's warranty bulletin excludes abrasion from pressure washing, brushes and tree branches.

Avery also says to use only the cleaning products it recommends. Our reading: keep the kitchen degreaser off the wrap.

What drives the cost of a food truck wrap

We give no figures here. But the documents show which choices change the job.

The film and its finish. Colour, metallic, textured and printed films carry different durability ratings. Some SW900 colours, mostly yellows, oranges and reds, are listed as not fully opaque, and paint lines of a different colour can show through. In the SW900 range, films 4 mil thick or more "may have reduced conformability".

Print and protection. Avery's printed durability figures are given for film with a named laminate, and 3M says graphic protection "may improve" durability. For the warranty, the film, ink, printer and laminate must be an approved combination.

The body. Both makers set different application conditions for flat panels, rivets, corrugations and compound curves. Stainless panels may need a different film. Builder-applied paint falls under what Avery calls non-OEM paint.

Matching rolls. Avery asks for one production lot per vehicle, and one roll per vehicle where possible for metallic and pearlescent films.

What goes with the wrap. On our own custom food trucks, paint, printed wrap, illuminated signage and LED lighting are designed together with the truck. Our food truck and trailer page lists wraps, signage, lighting and the delivery location among the things that change the price.

Our reading: each of these is a line a wrap shop or builder will price, and none of the sources says how much any one of them adds. So ask for a quote that names the film, the laminate, the printer and the areas covered.

US marking rules that the design must leave room for

If your truck counts as a commercial motor vehicle under FMCSA rules, the markings are part of the design. Under 49 CFR 390.5, that includes a vehicle used on a highway in interstate commerce to carry property with a weight rating, or an actual weight, of 10,001 pounds or more. Section 390.21 then requires the carrier's name and the USDOT number to:

• appear on both sides,
• contrast sharply with the background,
• be legible from 50 feet in daylight while the vehicle is stationary.

They may be painted on or be a removable device. Whether your food truck falls under this depends on its rating and where it travels, so check with FMCSA. Ask your licensing authority about any state or city lettering rules too. Our reading: if the marking applies, a busy full-colour wrap still needs a clean, high-contrast patch on each side.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a full truck wrap last?

It depends on the film and on how the surface faces the sun in your zone. Avery rates its SW900 colour film at up to 10 years on vertical sides in zone 1, but as little as 4 months on horizontal faces in zone 3. Printed MPI 1105 is rated at up to 7 years vertical, depending on the printer, ink and laminate. 3M's 10 years for IJ180Cv3 is an unwarranted estimate for unprinted film on a flat, vertical, outdoor surface.

Is it cheaper to paint or wrap a truck?

None of the sources we used settles that. When a wrap goes over paint, that paint still has to be sound and fully cured. Ask for both quotes on the same truck and compare the stated durability too.

How much does a wrap cost for your truck?

We don't give figures. The price follows the film, the print and laminate, the body shape and materials, and the area covered. A quote that names each of those can be compared line by line.

How much to wrap a 12 ft trailer?

Length is only one part of it. The body shape, any stainless panels, the roof and the film also change the job. Get a quote for your actual trailer.
